Jeffrey L. Richey is professor of Asian studies at Berea College. Educated at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Graduate Theological Union (PhD, 2000), he has published widely on a variety of topics related to his interests in early Chinese thought, Confucian and Daoist traditions, and the Japanese reception of classical Chinese culture. His books include Confucius in East Asia: Confucianism’s History in China, Korea, Japan and Viet Nam (Association for Asian Studies, 2013) and the edited volumes Daoism in Japan: Chinese Traditions and Their Influence on Japanese Religious Culture (Routledge, 2015), The Sage Returns: Confucian Revival in Contemporary China (coedited with Kenneth J. Hammond; State University of New York Press, 2015), and Teaching Confucianism (Oxford University Press, 2008). Since 2003, he has served as China Area Editor for the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. He vividly recalls seeing the films of the original Star Wars trilogy one by one in cinemas, which first introduced him to Buddhist and Daoist traditions, and has never missed any of the subsequent prequels or sequels.
