DH+BH: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Digital Humanities and Book History

DH+BH is the inaugural conference of the Digital Cultural Studies Cooperative (DCSC). This hybrid and distributed event is September 22-24, 2022, collaboratively hosted by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Southern Methodist University, the University of California Los Angeles, the Ohio State University, and Texas A&M University.

Digital scholarship happens at the convergence of a range of disciplines, technologies, and communities. The Digital Cultural Studies Cooperative is a community that seeks to explore, celebrate, question, and disrupt these intersections in order to advance an inclusive dialog that spans boundaries and highlights unlikely connections in the field of digital humanities. History of the book, grounded in the discipline of bibliography, is a rich field that is particularly amenable to digital interventions. Bibliographic data includes temporal, spatial, and named entity information that can be analyzed at scale. Long durée analyses of textual data can offer insights on topics, audiences, and patterns of language use over time. This event offers an opportunity for these communities to converge.

DCSC charges no membership fees. However, registration is required to participate. Registration is pay-what-you-are-able with a minimum recommended contribution of $45.

Keynote Speaker

Lisa Gitelman

Lisa Gitelman is a media historian whose research concerns American print culture, techniques of inscription, and the new media of yesterday and today. She is particularly concerned with tracing the patterns according to which new media become meaningful within and against the contexts of older media. Her most recent book is entitled Paper Knowledge: Toward a Media History of Documents and was published by Duke in 2014. Before that, Always Already New: Media, History, and the Data of Culture was published by the MIT Press in 2006. She holds a Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and is a former editor of the Thomas A. Edison Papers at Rutgers University. She has taught at the Catholic University of America and at Harvard University and is currently Professor in the Departments of English and Media, Culture and Communication at New York University.

Statement on Anti Racist Practice

The Digital Cultural Studies Cooperative takes it as axiomatic that the place where meaningful scholarship begins is at the intersection of disciplines and individuals. Academia is itself a hegemonic institution which reiterates numerous systemic oppressions of race, gender identity, sexuality, accessibility, and class, and thus even radical scholars find themselves caught in continuing cycles of academic gatekeeping and elitist hierarchies. We request that conference participants and attendees reflect on the intersection of their power, privilege, and potential to determine how they can meaningfully intervene in their work going forward.
